Oh My God of War Is Awesome!

God of War

Oh thank you Gamefly for finally getting a copy of God of War in and sending it to me. It is one of the sweetest PS2 games since Katamari Damacy. If you own a PS2 and you haven't played God of War yet. SHAME ON YOU! Seriously, what are you waiting for? Approval from the gods? Well, you got it. The God of 3kalbia hereby gives this game the official approval of 4W350M3!

Now you know you have to play the game, but "why?" you might ask. Well, hold on to your loincloth!

You play as Kratos, alas there is no Kang to accompany you. Kratos is a spartan OF THE GODS. He's killed many an innocent elderly lady to reach the top. However, even slaughtering millions and having 3somes with topless women whenever he likes comes with a price. Poor Kratos is haunted with nightmares of all the blood he's spilt, especially that elderly lady. So, the Gods make a deal with Kratos. Simply kill Ares, the god of war, and we will relieve you of your annoying headaches. So, with the secret handshake made Kratos sets of to Rome where Ares is gleefully stomping around a huge battlefield picking up soldiers and tossing them around like King Kong. Now Kratos, in true Michael Bay fashion, gloriously begins cutting down an unending army of Ares minions only to be left with the challenge of bringing down the ruthless behemoth.

Let's graphics in this game are stellar. They aren't the prettiest thing to hit a console, but this ain't no Xbox it's a PS2 for christ's sake. There's some pretty reflective surfaces though. The "making" factor to this game is its gameplay. A box of mythological cereal packed to the brim with action. As you progress through the game different Gods will present you with gifts a.k.a. skills like Rage of the Gods. With these skills at your side, along with your trusty Blades of Chaos (think Rygar) you become an unstoppable force for the millions of Ares' minions in wait. All of these skills can be leveled up with points acquired from killing... err... anything. Kratos has a hard hate on for anything that moves so leveling up is a hoot and Kratos always looks good doing it.

Just when you think this could be just another mindless hack 'n' slasher you begin to notice something new. Something previously used during vital cutscenes in Resident Evil 4. Mini Games!!! Fuck Yeah! Ok, so here's how it works in the God of Warniverse. Certain enemies and big bosses require you to pummel them to the point when a button flashes above them. Then you have to get close enough to enemy and push the button to activate the mini game. Soon you're treated to some incredible cinematics while you're battling the foe and are primed to push a squence of buttons to execute a devasting finishing blow to the helpless baddie.

All of this combined with some excellent features (slow-mo during blocks) and some good action oriented puzzles (moving & firing ballistas at an oncoming pack of minataurs) has put this game up as a prime running candidate for game of the year. So please do yourself a favor and go pick this one up.

more to come...
